A Study on Hospital Stresses Experienced and Coping Methods Used by Hospitalized Patients


Abstract
This study was conducted to identify hospital stresses experienced and coping methods used by hospitalized patients and to provide a guidline for efficient nursing intervention which contributes to the improvement of adaptaptionof hospitalized
patients.
The subjects for this study were 118 hospitalized patients in a general medical surgical wards of Psuan University Hospital.
Two instruments are used in this study. The first one to measure hospital stress is Volicer & Bohannon's HSRS( the Hospital Stress Rating Scale).
The second one is coping scale for evaluating coping methods developed by researcher on the basis of Bell's 18 Item Questionnarie.
The collected data were analyzed for percentage, mean, t-test ANOVA, pearson correlation coefficient using the SPSS computerized program.
The results obtained were summarized as follows:
1. The mean score of the hospital stresses was 2.33 and sociodemographic variables, the difference was statistically significant only for admission wards(P¡´0.05¡µ.
2. The event "Thinking you might have pain because of surgery or test procedures" was rated highest stressful(mean=3.03) and "Being put in the hospital because of an accident"(mean=1.69) least stressful.
3. The mean score of the coping methods was 2.50 and there were no significant difference in sociodemographic variables.
4. "Trust health personnels and comply with their advices" was most-used coping method (mean-3.60) and 'Blame someone else for your problem" least used coping method (mean=1.46).
5. Patients used long-term coping method (mean 2.77) more than short-term coping method (mean=2.28).
6. The relationship between the hospital stresses and coping methods was statistically significant at 0.005 level.
